Matthew 24:36-51
The Life Application New Testament Commentary: " While Jesus had given general
“signs” to watch for regarding the coming of the end, he clearly explained to
the disciples that the exact day or hour was not known by the angels or the Son
(Jesus himself). It is good that we don’t know exactly when Christ will return.
If we knew the precise date, we might be tempted to be lazy in our work for
Christ. Worse yet, we might plan to keep sinning and then turn to God right at
the end".
Mat 24:36 But of that day and
hour knoweth no one, not even the angels of heaven, neither the Son, but the
Father only.
Jesus is making it clear that there would be
no doubt when he comes. He also is saying that he is human and does not know Philippians 2:5-8. If we knew the time
of his return would we be as faithful,
work to save souls, continue in God's work or would we relax and wait?
Mat 24:37 And as were the days of Noah, so
shall be the coming of the Son of man.
Mat 24:38 For as in those days
which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving
in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, Mat 24:39 and they knew not until the flood came, and took them all
away; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.
Mat 24:40 Then shall two men be
in the field; one is taken, and one is left: Mat
24:41 two
women shall be grinding at the mill; one is taken, and one is left. Mat 24:42 Watch therefore: for ye know not on what day your Lord
cometh. Mat 24:43 But know this, that
if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he
would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken through.
Mat 24:44
Therefore be ye also ready; for in an hour that
ye think not the Son of man cometh. Mat 24:45 Who then is the
faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath set over his household, to give
them their food in due season? Mat 24:46 Blessed is that
servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Mat 24:47 Verily I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he
hath.
It was a common practice for the owner of the house to
put a servant in charge of the house. The servant that would get that job was
to oversee the household. We are the servant. God expects us to continue the
work he has given. See Matthew
28: 18-20, We need to be saving souls until the final day comes either by
our own death or his return.
Mat 24:48 But if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord tarried;
Mat 24:49
and shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and
shall eat and drink with the drunken; Mat 24:50 the lord of that
servant shall come in a day when he expected not, and in an hour when he
knoweth not, Mat 24:51 and shall cut him
asunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be the
weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
