Mathew 26: 14-30
JUDAS AGREES TO BETRAY JESUS JUDAS
Matthew 26:14-16
Mat 26:14 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests Mat 26:15 and asked, "How much will you pay me to betray Jesus to you?" And they gave him thirty pieces of silver.Judas most likely had never accepted Jesus as his Lord and was easily persuaded by Satan to go to the priests and ask for money if he betrayed Jesus. He ironically was paid 30 pieces of silver (Exodus 21:32). This was the price of a slave!
DISCIPLES PREPARE FOR THE PASSOVER
Matthew 26:17-19
Mat 26:16 From that time on, Judas began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus. Mat 26:17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do You want us to prepare the Passover meal for You?"
The Life Application New Testament
Commentary had this say about the these two verses. It pertains to the
Passover feast as practiced today:" The Passover took
place on one night and at one meal, but the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which
was celebrated with it, would continue for a week. The chronology of the events
of Jesus’ final week is as follows:
Thursday—Lambs were slain in the afternoon, Passover
began at 6:00 P.M., Last Supper, Gethsemane, arrest
Friday—Official trial, Crucifixion, burial by sundown,
Feast of Unleavened Bread and Sabbath began at 6:00 P.M.
Saturday—Jesus’ body was in the tomb
Sunday—Early morning Resurrection"
JESUS AND THE DISCIPLES SHARE THE LAST SUPPER
Matthew 26:20-30
Mat 26:18 "As
you go into the city," He told them, "you
will see a certain man. Tell him, 'The Teacher says: My time has come, and I
will eat the Passover meal with My disciples at your house." Mat 26:19 So
the disciples did as Jesus told them and prepared the Passover meal there.
The Passover meal had to be eaten after sundown
and before midnight.
Mat 26:20 When
it was evening, Jesus sat down at the table with the twelve disciples. Mat 26:21
While they were eating, He said, "I tell
you the truth, one of you will betray Me." Mat
26:22 Greatly distressed, each
one asked in turn, "Am I the one, Lord?" Mat
26:23 He replied, "One of you who has just eaten from this bowl with Me
will betray Me. Mat 26:24 For the Son of Man
must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for
the one who betrays Him. It would be far better for that man if he had never
been born!" Mat 26:25 Judas, the one who would betray Him, also
asked, "Rabbi, am I the one?" And Jesus told Him, "You have said it."
The disciples were very concern. Each one ask the
question "am I the one, Lord?" The disciples had seen many things
that Jesus had done. They knew that he was the son of God. It is feasible that
the disciples might think that they would be used to betray Jesus in some way.
Each one asked and only one had a positive reply. It is not said how the other
disciples reacted to that. They may not have heard the reply or Jesus kept them
from hearing the words. Judas knew he was the one but to keep his cover he ask
the question like the others. The punishment was spelled out in verse 26 is horrific. Judas
did not heed the warning and did it anyway.
Mat 26:26 As they were eating, Jesus
took some bread and blessed it. Then He broke it in pieces and gave it to the
disciples, saying, "Take this and eat it, for this
is My body." Mat 26:27 And He took a cup of wine and gave thanks to
God for it. He gave it to them and said, "Each of
you drink from it, Mat 26:28 for this is My blood,
which confirms the covenant between God and His people. It is poured out as a
sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.
This is communion as we know it today. When you
eat the small piece of bread or wafer do you remember Jesus words? When you
drink the grape juice or wine do you remember that Jesus spilled his blood.
There are 262 verses that contain the word blood and 303 matches to the word.
It is a powerful word and should not be taken lightly.
Mat 26:29 Mark
My words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in
My Father's Kingdom." Mat 26:30 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the
Mount of Olives.
I will
toast the day I see my Lord and hope it is a good merlot.
Agape.
