Matthew 20:17-28

Matthew 20:17-28

Mat 20:17 As Jesus was about to go up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and on the way He said to them, Mat 20:18 "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, Mat 20:19 and will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and scourge and crucify Him, and o the third day He will be raised up."
Jesus, for the third time told the disciples that he was to be crucified. Matthew 16:21 and Matthew 17: 22-23 He also had told them that it would be in Jerusalem Luke 9:51.This is the first time they put together the fact that Jesus was going to a Roman community. Jesus also state clearly that he would rise again in 3 days. Because of the reaction they all had at his death the statement Jesus said about rising fell on deaf ears. It also should be noted that this was predicted in the old testament several times. Isaiah 53:12 is the best example of that.
Mat 20:20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, bowing down and making a request of Him. Mat 20:21 And He said to her, "What do you wish?" She said to Him, "Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on Your right and one on Your left."
The sons of Zebedee were James and John. The mother of James and John was named Salome (Matthew 27:56 compared with Mark 15:40; Mark 16:1); she had left her husband Zebedee (Mark 1:20) in Galilee (unless, as is more probable from the terms in which she is introduced, he was now dead), and followed Jesus in the band of holy women who attended on him. Found in the Bible hub.
Mat 20:22 But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to Him, "We are able." Mat 20:23 He said to them, "My cup you shall drink; but to sit on My right and on My left, this is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by My Father."
More than likely James and John asked their mother to ask Jesus for this honor. When Jesus answered he asked them if they would be able to drink from the same cup, Matthew 26:39. This cup was the crucifixion. I am not sure if they knew what that meant. They did abandon Jesus at the garden of Gethsemane. They ultimately did pay the price for their beliefs later.  Acts 12:12 and Revelation 1:9
Mat 20:24 And hearing this, the ten became indignant with the two brothers. Mat 20:25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. Mat 20:26 "It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, Mat 20:27 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; Mat 20:28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

Peter must have been irate since he was also at the Transfiguration. The disciples were still in Jealousy mode. Jesus needed the disciples to eventually pull together. He brought them together to explain. He also told them that it was not his decision.
