PAUL GIVES THANKS TO GOD
1 Corinthians 1:4-9
1Co 1:4 I always
thank my God for you and for the gracious gifts He has given you, now that you
belong to Christ Jesus.
Paul Starts all his letters this way. Please note in the verses below Paul uses a similar intro to Romans, Philippians, and Colossians.
1Co 1:5 Through
Him, God has enriched your church in every way—with all of your
eloquent words and all of your knowledge. 1Co 1:6 This
confirms that what I told you about Christ is true.
Paul had seen the growth of the Colossian
church. But in true Roman Style they were ramping up the words and inputting
some additional showmanship to draw attention to themselves and not to Jesus
Christ.
1Co 1:7 Now you
have every spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of our
Lord Jesus Christ.
Every believing church has people in it that
have different spiritual gifts. The Colossian church had all the spiritual
gifts they needed to carry out God’s work.
1Co 1:8 He will
keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame on the day
when our Lord Jesus Christ returns.
Life Application New Testament Commentary
1:8 There will be an end to the eager
waiting of believers (1Co_1:7),
because Christ will return. Not only have the believers received gifts for
building up the church and standing against sin, but Christ would also keep
them strong until the day the Lord Jesus Christ returns.
Because Christ has died for believers, given them spiritual gifts, and promised
to return for them, Paul guaranteed these believers that God would also
consider them free from all blame (see Rom_8:33-34;
Eph_1:7-10).
This guarantee was not because of their great gifts or their shining
performance, but because of what Jesus Christ accomplished for them through his
death and resurrection.
1Co 1:9 God will
do this, for He is faithful to do what He says, and He has invited you into partnership with His Son, Jesus Christ our
Lord.
