SIN’S POWER IS BROKEN
Romans 6:1-14
Life Application New Testament Commentary’s open statement:”
Up to this point in his letter, Paul has shown people’s need for salvation,
God’s gift of that salvation through the death of his Son, and God’s grace in
forgiving the sins of all who accept him. This next section of the letter
(chapters 6–8) deals with God progressively separating believers from sin and
making them more like himself. The key point to realize is that all believers
have a new nature and the Holy Spirit within, yet they also have the old, human
nature with its capability to sin. These opposites are in constant tension, yet
God promises help and victory.”
Rom 6:1 Well then, should we
keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of His wonderful grace? Rom 6:2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how
can we continue to live in it?
If you were continuing in your old sinful ways, the question
quickly comes up did you really accept Christ? If you had accepted Christ your
old ways would feel different, sinful or against God’s will. We accepted Christ
to be more like him and accept the reward of eternal life.
Rom 6:3 Or have you
forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined Him
in His death? Rom 6:4 For we died and were
buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by
the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. Rom 6:5 Since we have been united with Him in His
death, we will also be raised to life as He was.
Okay what does all that mean?
For instance, what does “joined him in death” mean. That would be the
point at which you accepted Christ as your savior. You have given up your old
life to become more like Jesus. You were born again at this point. "Jesus answered and said unto him, 'Truly, truly I say
unto you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God... unless
one is born of the water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of
God." (John 3:3,5).
Rom 6:6 We know that our old
sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in
our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. Rom 6:7
For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. Rom 6:8 And since we died with Christ, we know we
will also live with Him.
From the Bible itself these are but two or many verses.
Rom 5:10 For since our
friendship with God was restored by the death of His Son while we were still
His enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of His Son.
Luke_18:30 will be repaid many times over in this life, and will have eternal life in the world to
come."
