1 Timothy 6:2-10

FALSE TEACHING AND TRUE RICHES

1 Timothy 6:2-10

1Ti 6:3  Some people may contradict our teaching, but these are the wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. These teachings promote a godly life.

The people that were contradicting were the false teachers in Ephesus. He is asking Timothy to promote a Godly life. Imagine if we all obeyed Gods teachings to the letter with no one believing anything else. I think that may be called Heaven. Okay, no IRS, no, police, no armies, no fears from anyone else, no gossip, no lies and on and on. I personally have a hard time imagining that but what a great place to live this would be.

1Ti 6:4  Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions.

The big thing in this verse for me is, (quibble over the meaning of words). Our churches in America quibble over many things that are small and sometimes big. small things like  baptizing at birth or when they are old enough and have accepted Christ. Or bigger things like Gay marriage which the Bible prohibits. Lev_18:22  Lev_20:13  1Co_6:9  1Ti_1:10 . You may believe what is said in the Bible or not but you cannot change the words.

1Ti 6:5  These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy. 1Ti 6:6  Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. 1Ti 6:7  After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can't take anything with us when we leave it.
1Ti 6:8  So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content.

Our pastor spoke this Sunday on this very topic. He is doing a series on the Henry Cloud book Never Go Back Chapter five is titled "Chose short term comforts over long term benefits". When we die we take nothing of this physical world with us. The things that we have  done for God go with us. Which goal do you want pleasure for you time on earth or a good life for eternity.

1Ti 6:9  But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. 1Ti 6:10  For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

If you have a billion dollars and you buy everything that you want  a car, house etc. and you spend 2,000,000 dollars what do you do with the rest? Most billionaires want more, to do what with? you still have 980,000,000 in the bank. We work with a Charity that is called Feed My Starving Children, that 980,000,000 would buy 3.9 trillion meals.  you would not need to spend that much that number exceeds the number of people on earth by 2 times and most of the people are not starving.
