WARNINGS AGAINST FALSE TEACHINGS
1 Timothy 1:3-7
1 Timothy 1:3 When I left for Macedonia, I urged you to
stay there in Ephesus and stop those whose teaching is contrary to the truth. 1 Timothy 1:4
Don't let them waste their time in endless discussion of myths and
spiritual pedigrees. These things only lead to meaningless speculations, which
don't help people live a life of faith in God.
Timothy was being urged by Paul to work with Ephesus. There were people
there that were trying to become spiritual leaders but were not ordained by God
nor were they speaking the whole truth. Timothy was young and maybe a bit shy
and needed to know that Paul would back him and also that God wanted him there.
1 Timothy 1:5 The purpose of my instruction is that all
believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear
conscience, and genuine faith. 1 Timothy 1:6 But some people have missed this whole point.
They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless
discussions. 1 Timothy 1:7 They want to be known as teachers of the law
of Moses, but they don't know what they are talking about, even though they
speak so confidently.
Have you ever been caught up in a meaningless conversation with another
person or another. Something like the whole earth being made in 6 days. It
would start out that the Bible says: 2Pe 3:8 But you must not forget this one thing, dear
friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is
like a day. But Genesis says the world was created in 6 days and on the 7th he rested.
Gen 1:31 Then God looked over all He had made, and He
saw that it was very good! And evening passed and morning came, marking the
sixth day. Please not that the Genesis has morning and night mentioned so that would
make it a day as we see it. The point I am trying to make here is that
whichever way you believe on this 6 days issue it has little impact on bringing
people to redemption with God. Personally if God can create a universe I think doing that in 6 days would not be an
issue. We are not able to know the mind of God and the power that he has.
We as believers in Christ are instructed in Mathew to make disciples. We
are not instructed to to have discussions that pull people away from the Lord
for our own benefit as they were doing in Ephesus. Mat 28:19 Therefore, go and
make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and
the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Mat 28:20 Teach these new
disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am
with you always, even to the end of the age."
