ROMAN SOLDIERS MOCK JESUS
Matthew 27:27-31
Matthew 27:27 Some of the governor's soldiers took Jesus
into their headquarters and called out the entire regiment. Matthew 27:28
They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. Matthew 27:29 They wove
thorn branches into a crown and put it on His head, and they placed a reed
stick in His right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before Him in mockery and
taunted, "Hail! King of the Jews!" Matthew
27:30 And they spit on Him and
grabbed the stick and struck Him on the head with it. Matthew
27:31 When they were finally
tired of mocking Him, they took off the robe and put His own clothes on Him
again. Then they led Him away to be crucified.
It should be remembered that Jesus had already been whipped.
The soldier put a crown of thorns on his head and found a robe for him to wear. The
scepter was a stick that he was later beat with. The soldiers spit on him,
mocked him, and finally took him . All of this had prophesized in Isaiah
56:6 it goes as follows : I offered my back to those
who beat me and my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard. I did not
hide my face from
mockery and spitting. This was an entire battalion
of Roman soldiers so we are talking about 200 men who were hitting and
spitting on Jesus
JESUS IS LED AWAY AND PLACED ON THE CROSS
Matthew 27:32-44
Simon was just there going from where to where we do not
know. He was a Jew but not from Israel Act_2:10.
I am not sure if Simon felt that this was a privilege but in time
when Jesus successfully defeats death he must have had some strong thoughts on
it.
Matthew 27:36 Then they sat around and kept guard as He
hung there. Matthew 27:37 A sign was fastened above Jesus' head,
announcing the charge against Him. It read: "This is Jesus, the King of
the Jews."
It was Roman custom to put a sign on each cross displaying
the crime that that man was being crucified. Jesus was not convicted of a crime
so the put a belligerent sign saying king
of the Jews. Little did they know
what that sign really meant.
Matthew 27:38 Two revolutionaries (criminals) were
crucified with Him, one on His right and one on His left. Matthew 27:39 The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking
their heads in mockery.
Do you remember what James and John asked for? Matthew
20:20-22 They asked to be on his right and left. This was the beginning of
the new Testament period where we could be saved. So James and John would have
been on the cross on the right and the left.
Matthew 27:40
"Look at You now!" they yelled at Him. "You said You were
going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days. Well then, if You are
the Son of God, save Yourself and come down from the cross!" Matthew 27:41
The leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders also
mocked Jesus. Matthew 27:42 "He saved others," they scoffed,
"but He can't save Himself! So He is the King of Israel, is He? Let Him
come down from the cross right now, and we will believe in Him! Matthew 27:43
He trusted God, so let God rescue Him now if He wants Him! For He said,
'I am the Son of God.'" Matthew 27:44 Even the revolutionaries who were crucified
with Him ridiculed Him in the same way.
We have heard this before when Satan took Jesus out into the
wilderness. He did not give in then and he did not give in now.
